Motivational interviewing (MI) is a counseling method designed to strengthen an individual’s motivation for change. It has been studied and utilized extensively by a variety of health professionals to influence behavior change relating to mental health, sexual health and weight management among other conditions. Dr. Sam Wakim will review the definitions, principles and key techniques of motivational interviewing. He will also discuss how motivational interviewing in combination with caries risk assessments and self-management goals are being used to prevent dental caries.
